Beyond The Ridge
Ron and Gypsy Killswarrior are siblings who I made a close connection with while visiting Pine Ridge Native American Reservation, South Dakota. The Oglala Lakota people own this land and it is only a fraction of what was once their's. Pine Ridge is the site of several events that marked tragic milestones in the history between the Sioux of the area and the United States government, including the Wounded Knee Massacre in 1890. Oglala Lakota County is the poorest county in the United States and also holds the lowest life expectancy. Ron and Gypsy let me join their routine and share in intimate parts of their land and traditions. These photographs are documentation of my time on the reservation over five separate trips between 2005 and 2011.
